Improving Your Bathroom With The Perfect Window Treatment
Picking the right window coverings for your bathroom isn't always the easiest task. No matter what ideal aesthetic you have in mind, you've also got to find an option that's built to last the conditions in your bathroom. Even if your bathroom is well-ventilated, the humidity and heat in there can cause certain materials to crack, mildew, or otherwise deteriorate. Luckily, we can offer some suggestions for bathroom-friendly window coverings that both look lovely and require minimal maintenance!
Blinds: Aluminum Or Faux Wood
If you just want some nice, basic blinds for your bathroom, we advise against using fabric or natural wood. These materials, while attractive, are the most susceptible to moisture and heat damage. Even treated natural woods need extra upkeep to prevent decay and damage. Aluminum and composite blinds are more ideal for use in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other areas with high humidity and temperature changes.
If you want window coverings with maximal moisture protection, we personally recommend aluminum blinds, which will not absorb any moisture at all and are very resistant to rust and corrosion. However, if you want to approximate the look of natural wood blinds, faux wood blinds are a great compromise; mimicking the appearance of wood but with enhanced resistance to moisture, warping, cracking, and mold growth.
Plantation-Style Shutters
If you want something elegant, airy, and a little luxurious, plantation-style shutters are a great look. They have a nice, classic appearance that fits well with a lot of styles, and the louvers can be fitted to provide total privacy and light control when fully closed. Shutters are also durable by design and are a great choice for bathrooms.
Again, while you can use natural wood shutters in your bathroom, they may require more maintenance to prevent decay. If you want to minimize the amount of hands-on upkeep you have to perform on your shutters, we recommend opting for hybrid polymer shutters that mimic the look of wood while having the benefit of enhanced durability.
Moisture-Resistant Shades
You can use shades in a bathroom, and a lot of people prefer the enhanced privacy and aesthetic edge that shades offer. However, because shades use fabric, which is more susceptible to moisture, be strategic with your choice. We generally recommend not installing shades right next to showers and tubs unless your bathroom is well-ventilated, and even then we advise cleaning and inspecting your shades regularly to check for mold growth.
As for fabrics, if you want the best protection against moisture, vinyl shades are your safest choice. However, if you prefer the look and feel of natural fabrics, we recommend using light, airy options like cotton or linen, which will dry faster than heavy, tightly woven fabrics.
